Are studios the new agencies?

For years, the default move for brands needing scale, creative strategy, and/or high-end production was to sign a healthy agency retainer. But the landscape is different now. In many situations, they don't need a large, layers-deep agency to take over their brand, they need highly specialized plug and play partners to power it up.

87.3% of agency professionals believe the traditional agency model is either broken today or racing in that direction

With Ad spend projected to surpass $1 trillion globally for the first time in 2026, brands need partners who can help them navigate an increasingly complex and fragmented media landscape. The need is there...but are clients being given the right model?

According to The Basis 2026 Advertising Agency Report, 87.3% of agency professionals believe the traditional agency model is either broken today or racing in that direction, including 91.5% of senior leaders. Simultaneously, agencies’ relationships with their client are growing increasingly tense. Over half of all agencies say their client relationships are more strained today than they were two years ago, up slightly from last year. These struggles are emblematic of clients’ ever-growing expectations and rising pressure on agencies to become more nimble, more effective, and more efficient.

So, all that to say, ”Agency” has become a bit of a loaded word. It often carries some heavy baggage: bloat, layers, slow execution, and friction with a brand’s internal teams. Plus good stuff to be sure.

That’s why we believe the modern marketing support system is moving toward the Studio Model.

A studio isn't designed to replace your internal team; it’s purpose-built to augment them. Where big agencies bring process and swirl, a studio brings execution and speed. At Icehouse, we’ve spent a lot of time looking at the whitespace between internal teams, freelancers, and traditional agencies. We realized that what brands actually need today is a partner that is:

The future isn't about giving up control to an agency. It’s about partnering with a high-caliber studio that plays well with others, respects your brand standards, and is single-mindedly focused on your business outcomes.

Snackable & project-based relationships can be easy to buy into, and justify with superior quality and outcomes. Lean & flat teams, with little to zero bloat. If bloat does exist, it's generally the studio’s problem, not the client. Collaborative, not precious with teams that fit around a client’s needs…big or small, broad or narrow, without charging for every single microscopic tweak. Malleable. Choosing people from different parts of the studio to help is commonplace and always encouraged. Hyper-accountability from the studio that works without a retainer safety. Studios are incentivized to bring elite quality and zero complacency to every single project. No hidden internal “Tax" which plagues traditional models. Often, hours inflate as projects move across departments. In a flat studio model, every dollar goes directly toward on-screen value and business outcomes.

The future isn't about giving up control to an agency. It’s about partnering with a high-caliber studio that plays well with others, respects your brand standards, and is single-mindedly focused on your business outcomes.
